Skulls and Diamond Plate
During a Stone Sculpture Class in 2020, one of my instructors, the Italian educated sculptor Fred X. Brownstein, made a bold statement: “The Human Skull is the most perfect design in nature!”
I had never thought about the skull in this way, although by that time I had already carved and created many skulls for jewelry designs. My skull journey began in 1990 when the great Texas musician Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and ‘SharpDressed Man’ visited my studio. I was surprised by his request for a custom skull belt buckle. Interpreting the human skull in my jewelry had never occurred to me. Yet I jumped at the challenge. I was honored by the opportunity to create an artistic statement for Gibbons, while also intrigued by the idea of designing, and ultimately making, something original and amazing with the skull motif.
